The prize is awarded yearly to a music or architecture student and provides a $7500 stipend to support a student pursuing summer study of traditional architecture and urbanism or music in European towns and cities. The foundation recognizes the life-changing potential of immersion in a culture, language, and environment that is different from one's own. Selection is based on a proposal, which describes how their travel will aid them in "...developing their craft as well as the intellectual content of their proposal in architecture or music". A faculty committee reviews the proposals and makes the selection during the fall semester for travel the following summer.
Architecture students in their third or fourth year of undergraduate or first year of graduate study and music students in their third year of undergraduate or first year of graduate study may submit proposals for this stipend.
